UOIT salutes Canada Research Chairs

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) five Canada Research Chairs (CRC) joined fellow CRC's from across Ontario at the Thinking Ahead For A Strong Future conference held to celebrate the program's 10th anniversary. The event kicked off with the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, announcing an investment of $275.6 million to fund 310 new or renewed CRCs at 53 Canadian universities.

Fresh off an impressive showing last spring, University of Ontario Institution of Technology (UOIT) automotive engineering students are gearing up to take another giant step forward in the third and final year of EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge. UOIT is one just 16 North American universities (and one of just three in Canada) taking part in the prestigious automotive engineering competition sponsored by General Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The UOIT team is ready to refine its vehicle and put its finished product to the ultimate test in 2011.

Oshawa, ON - Industry-focused research efforts at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) have received a significant boost with the approval for $739,000 in funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) under the agency's Applied Research and Commercialization Initiative (ARC). The funding will assist UOIT to partner with Durham and Northumberland regions' small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to solve research-based questions and have an immediate, positive impact on these businesses.

Government of Canada supports development opportunities in Oshawa

Oshawa residents and businesses could see the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) expand its downtown campus in the future. The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (FedDev Ontario, and Science and Technology) and Colin Carrie, Member of Parliament for Oshawa, announced that the government would support a feasibility study to look at the economic benefits for the university's plans to grow. They also celebrated new federally funded research underway at the university.

UOIT students celebrate first day at downtown Oshawa campus

Hundreds of students, staff and faculty arrived en masse to downtown Oshawa today as the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) held a special ceremony at the Regent Theatre to officially welcome students to their new urban campus. Guests were greeted by Student Association President, Anthony Boland and Faculty of Social Science and Humanities student, Rachel Calvelli. UOIT's Dr. Ronald Bordessa, president, Dr. Richard Marceau, provost, Dr. Nawal Ammar, dean and Mayor John Gray were also on hand to welcome the students.

Engineering researchers receive UOIT's first-ever Early Researcher Awards

Two professors at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) were recently awarded $140,000 each to further develop clean and green wireless communication technologies and reduce production costs of manufacturing companies with new and improved manufacturing robots. Dr. Shahram Shahbazpanahi and Dr. Dan Zhang have secured the university's first Early Researcher Awards, a program sponsored by the Ministry of Research and Innovation.

UOIT professor receives first Discovery Accelerator Supplement grant as part of more than $2 million in funding from NSERC

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) announced today that 18 of its world-class researchers have collectively been awarded $2,027,253 in funding from Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada's (NSERC). Included in this funding is the university's first Discovery Accelerator Supplement grant, which was announced on June 22 by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology).

Chairman's Charity Classic raises $341,500 for Durham College and UOIT students and Abilities Centre

Thanks to the efforts of sponsors, donors, volunteers and more than 240 golfers, the14th annual Durham Region Chairman's Charity Classic golf tournament was another huge success, raising $341,500. The event, which took place on June 10 at Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility in Ajax, Ontario, welcomed hundreds of community members, golfers and dignitaries as they teed off for a chance to improve the lives of individuals living in Durham Region.

UOIT chemistry student wins top prize in Ontario

For the second year in a row, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) Faculty of Science is celebrating the outstanding achievement of a fourth-year chemistry student on the provincial stage. Andrew Pedersen has topped the competition at the 38th Southern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference (SOUSCC). Pedersen won the honour March 20 in London during the conference hosted by the University of Western Ontario.

UOIT honours fallen soldiers with Project Hero scholarship

In recognition of the heroism and personal sacrifices of fallen Canadian Forces personnel, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is waiving tuition and residence fees for the dependents of the men and women killed while serving in an active military mission. The scholarships are part of Project Hero, an initiative aimed to help children of deceased Canadian soldiers obtain a post-secondary education free of financial constraints.

The new General Motors of Canada (GM) Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) will have two highly experienced professionals at the wheel with the addition of Gary Elfstrom as the director of business development and John Komar as the director of engineering and operations. Both men are engineers with extensive experience having worked in Canada and abroad designing, building and managing proving grounds and technically advanced test facilities, particularly in the area of aeronautical and automotive testing.

Harold 'Pat' Dooley's legacy lives on at UOIT

Harold 'Pat' Dooley, a man passionate about education and a steadfast supporter of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and its students, has left a $300,000 bequest to the university that will keep his spirit alive on campus and in the hearts of students for years to come. Dooley passed away on November 15, 2009 at the remarkable age of 103.

UOIT awarded more than $2.6-million in funding from federal government and GM of Canada

Electric vehicle research at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) received a substantial financial boost today, as Minister of Industry Tony Clement announced a $1.2-million investment to improve electric vehicles with extended range capabilities (EV) as part of the Automotive Partnership Canada initiative. This is the first research project to be announced under the APC umbrella.

Health Sciences student earns nuclear safety scholarship

By mixing her University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Health Sciences studies with research opportunities and an internship at Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Jessica O'Brien has become the first-ever Canadian student to receive a Roy G. Post Foundation Scholarship.

UOIT student David Millie has been selected as Scout Canada's representative to an international youth gathering in the United Arab Emirates. He developed Professor Dr. Khalil El-Khatib's idea for a parental monitoring system and will present the work to youth from around the world.
