Faculty members and graduates from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Master of Health Sciences (MHSc) program gathered on November 13 to celebrate the accomplishments of Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) graduate students who completed their degrees in 2013.

Bahar Karbalaei graduated with a Registered Practical Nursing (RPN) diploma from Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario in 2006. After working for a few years as an RPN, she became interested in leadership, health policy and health systems. In 2010, Karbalaei enrolled in the RPN to BScN bridge program at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). After successfully completing two bridge courses, she entered directly into the third year of the BScN program.

As a Scholar-Leader, Amanda Peltier, aboriginal student in UOIT's Energy Systems Engineering program, will be mentored by a business leader at GE Canada and participate in community development projects.

Amanda Peltier, an aboriginal student in the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Energy Systems Engineering program, was recently recognized as a 2013 GE Foundation Scholar-Leader. The program, sponsored by the GE Foundation and administered by the Institute of International Education, provides financial support and skills development opportunities for accomplished first-year undergraduate students of aboriginal descent who are pursuing degrees in the fields of engineering or business/management.

Dr. Aled Edwards was welcomed to UOIT on September 24 as the featured speaker for the sixth-annual Purdue Pharma Distinguished Lecture. Dr. Edwards’ presentation Open Access Drug Discovery outlined his position that industry and academia need to adopt new approaches to explore the many unknowns of human biology and to manage the unpredictable and expensive process of drug discovery.

As part of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) commitment to helping students achieve their greatest potential, the university’s Board of Governors has announced a new incentive for donations to the Student Success Fund (SSF). Under the plan, UOIT will match up to $1 million in new gifts to the SSF through the end of 2014.

The most recent CRNE scores are the highest in the history of the Nursing program at UOIT and some of the best, not only in the province of Ontario, but also across Canada.

UOIT nursing students receive record national exam results

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Faculty of Health Sciences has received outstanding results from the most recent Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE), with 98 per cent of UOIT-Durham College Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) students passing the exam and 100 per cent of Registered Practical Nursing (RPN) to BScN students passing. In addition, 92 per cent of UOIT-Durham College-Georgian College Collaborative Nursing Program (RPN to BScN) students also passed.

One of the great traditions of Orientation Week at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is the annual soccer showdown between the UOIT Ridgebacks and their campus rivals at Durham College. The soccer teams at the university and the college play in different leagues, but they always face off in a grudge match in early September for campus bragging rights.

University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) students Matthew Clark and Alvin Lee are in the national spotlight for being part of the winning team in the first-ever 24-hour RBC Next Great Innovator (NGI) Challenge Prototyping Event.

Dr. Isaac Tamblyn's previous research examined how life on Earth could have had its origins in space. He is currently working on a research project that applies high-performance computing to the field of renewable energy.

Durham Region Transit announces service amendments to U-Pass program

Durham Region Transit (DRT) has unveiled a series of service amendments to the One Fare Anywhere system that forms a key component of the Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass) program for full-time students at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Durham College. The DRT changes which may or may not impact students’ U-Pass usage will take effect on Saturday, June 29, 2013.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) recently held a Three-Minute Thesis competition (3MT®), which challenges a group of graduate students to present their research and explain its wider impact in three minutes or less to a panel of non-specialist judges. The challenge is to present complex research in an engaging, accessible and compelling way, using only one slide.

The research of Dr. Andrea Slane, an Associate Professor of Legal Studies with the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FSSH) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), was recently cited in an Ontario Court of Appeal decision (R. v. Ward, 2012 ONCA 660) regarding Internet Service Provider (ISP) disclosure of customer information to police conducting child pornography investigations.

Facing stiff competition in a field of 32 entries, a team of five Accounting students from the UOIT Faculty of Business and Information Technology’s (FBIT) Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) program earned an impressive fourth-place finish at a recent national business conference in downtown Toronto.

Fourth-year Radioactive Waste Management Design students in the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) enjoyed a unique opportunity this year to observe operations at Bruce Power’s Bruce A nuclear generating station on the shore of Lake Huron near Tiverton, Ontario. The Bruce Power site is the largest operating nuclear facility in the world. It currently supplies more than one-quarter of Ontario’s electricity.
