Each year, seven outstanding students at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) receive the university’s most prestigious entrance scholarships. The university’s entrance scholarship program recognizes first-year students for exceptional achievement in academics, leadership and community involvement throughout their secondary school career.

The university’s major entrance scholarships include:

  • Chancellor’s Scholarship - one valued at $36,000 ($9,000 each year for four years)
  • President’s Scholarship - two valued at $30,000 ($7,500 each year for four years)
  • Founder’s Scholarship - two valued at $24,000 ($6,000 each year for four years)
  • FIRST Robotics Canada Scholarship - one valued at $12,000 ($3,000 each year for four years)
  • Global Leadership Award - one valued at $72,000 ($18,000 each year for four years)

Chancellor’s Scholarship recipient Sushmitha Srinivasan (Biological Science-Life Sciences) is dedicated to her studies, and it shows. After completing her secondary school education at Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School in Scarborough, Ontario, she received the Governor General’s Academic Medal (Bronze) for graduating with the highest average from a Canadian secondary school. Srinivasan aspires to become a neurosurgeon; she recognizes that selecting UOIT for her undergraduate education will help her reach this goal. “One reason I chose UOIT is because of the vast resources provided to students,” Srinivasan says. “Initiatives like this entrance scholarship allow us to overcome barriers and pursue our dreams.”

Kierstyn Hawke of Oshawa, Ontario (Health Science) and Alyssa Williams of Ajax, Ontario (Biological Science-Life Sciences) are recipients of the President’s Scholarship. Hawke is a dedicated athlete who hopes to one day compete for Canada on the Olympic mountain biking team. She also plans to pursue a graduate degree in health science. Williams is an avid volunteer and aspires to attend medical school.

Ainsley Leguard of Cobourg, Ontario (Communication and Digital Media Studies) and Sivim Sohail of Whitby, Ontario (Biological Science) both received Founder’s Scholarships. When considering the university, Leguard was impressed by the small class sizes and the enthusiasm she saw from students and staff when she visited the campus. “I wanted to be a part of a university that is committed to the success of students, so I chose UOIT,” says Leguard, an avid volunteer and athlete who was selected to compete on the provincial beach volleyball team. Sohail chose UOIT because of the university’s unique commitment to academics and the application of technology. She is an active volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society.

The recipient of the FIRST Robotics Canada Scholarship is Sohaib Nadeem of Scarborough, Ontario (Mechatronics Engineering). Nadeem’s interest in engineering began early when he built his own computer in Grade 8. In addition to his participation in the FIRST Robotics team at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute, he builds robots in his spare time.

Nashelle Hird from Annotto Bay, Jamaica (Communication and Digital Media Studies) received the Global Leadership Award. “Saying that receiving the Global Leadership Award means the world to me is an understatement,” Hird says. “I feel honoured to have been selected from the many international students who applied.”

All scholarships were well-earned and the university wishes the recipients the best as they begin their undergraduate careers at the university.
