The University of Ontario Institute of Technology announces the appointment of Jamie Bruno as Assistant Vice-President, Human Resources (AVP HR), effective Monday, December 18. The AVP HR position will report to the university’s Provost.

Mr. Bruno is a longtime human resources leader in the Ontario public sector. He joins the university from North York General Hospital (NYGH) in Toronto, Ontario where he was Chief Human Resources Officer. While in this role he oversaw employee and labour relations, leading complex initiatives including the development of the hospital’s executive compensation framework. He also led the redesign of its People Strategy to improve overall tracking and reporting of enterprise human capital data.

Prior to his time at NYGH, Mr. Bruno spent more than a decade with various Ontario Government ministries in labour relations and corporate employee relations. With the Ministry of Government Services (now Treasury Board Secretariat), he consulted on senior executive recruitment before leading the ministry’s Strategic Business Unit.

In the Ontario Public Sector (OPS) he was a member of negotiating teams for multiple rounds of collective bargaining. He developed talent-management supports to enhance succession planning and recruitment for senior leadership positions, and directed HR planning on organizational design activities at both the divisional and ministry levels.

Mr. Bruno earned his Bachelor of Arts in Labour Relations at the University of Toronto, and received a Master of Industrial Relations from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He has lectured at the Humber College Business School in Toronto (Human Resources and the Learning Organization) and has shared his experience as a guest speaker at Queen’s University (HR Decision-Making).

Among his accolades, Mr. Bruno received the OPS Excellence in Inspirational Leadership Award (2014) and the OPS Human Resources Award of Excellence (2007).

He also played for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team while completing his undergraduate degree.
